DSE (Display Screen Equipment) users include any member of the workforce using a PC, laptop, tablet and/or smartphone for more than an hour during their usual working day. As working from home becomes more commonplace, businesses are faced with the complication of helping ensure staff remain safe and healthy.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) website explains that; “Employers have the same health and safety responsibilities for employees working from home as for any other employees…”.
It’s generally recognised that there’s no additional risks from DSE for home workers compared to the usual workplace and it’s not a requirement of employers to ask staff to complete home workstation assessments.
DSE for home workers – making it safe
Employers should ensure they have regular talks with all home working staff, so they’re able to raise any issues that may affect their ongoing health.
Points for discussion should cover;
- The home working environment
Is it the right temperature?
Is it uncluttered?
Is it a pleasant atmosphere?
- The home workspace
Do they have a suitable desk or table?
Do they have a comfortable, supporting seat?
Do they have the right equipment?
- Their physical and mental health
Are they taking regular breaks?
Are they feeling lonely / missing work colleagues?
Are they getting enough sleep?
These points and many more are covered in our Assessing DSE online training course. In less than 2 hours, all homeworking staff can benefit from time saving, affordable training that’s approved by IIRSM.
