Asbestos is a whitish material found in buildings for insulation, flooring and roofing.

Asbestos was often used before year 2000 in industrial and residential buildings whether it be new build or restoration work and can also be found in many commonly used building materials.  It is not known to cause risk to health if left undisturbed but if it requires repair or removal then this will need to be done in a safe way to prevent putting yourself or others at risk.

When Asbestos is repaired or removed it can cause it to become friable which can lead to dangerous tiny fibre’s being released leading to these fibre’s being inhaled or swallowed and can seriously damage our health leading to Asbestosis, complications of this are serious lung conditions or Cancer.

Around 20 tradesmen per week die from previous exposure. Asbestos is responsible for killing around 5000 people per year!

Many professions can come into contact with Asbestos here are a few examples:

  • Fire and burglar Alarm engineers
  • Telephone engineers
  • Electricians
  • Plasterers
  • Painters and decorators
  • Construction workers
  • Heating and ventilation engineers

Workers who carry out work that will disturb Asbestos require training and information about the material and have a suitable level of Asbestos awareness. It is essential to know which type of Asbestos removal is required for your project.

How often do I need Asbestos refresher training?

It is advisable to carryout Refresher training  every year,  levels of training depends on what type of Asbestos work you carry out.

Is Asbestos training a legal responsibility?

There is a legal duty for employers to provide information, instruction and training for any employee that is likely to be exposed to Asbestos in their work.

Do I need Personal protective equipment (PPE) to work with Asbestos?

Yes Personal protective equipment (PPE) should be used at all times when working with Asbestos, the level of PPE required will be indicated in your health and safety risk assessment.
